4 Traits of Health Content That Engages and Satisfies

Patient education can be one of healthcare providers’ most effective tools in today’s value-based care systems. By setting patient expectations, promoting behavior change and measuring adherence to a care plan, it can improve outcomes and have financial benefits.

At UbiCare, we call this kind of patient education “architected” content because of the research, thought and strategy that goes into its construct. It’s designed to engage patients, improve care outcomes and increase satisfaction for patients and healthcare providers alike.

No matter what you call it, patient engagement technology fueled by evidence-based, carefully “architected” content has several important elements.

5 Reasons to Rethink Building Your Own Patient Engagement Solution

Posted by Jackie Simon on Aug 17, 2017 3:02:00 PM

"Why wouldn’t we build our own patient engagement solution in-house?”

It’s a question we hear often enough from hospital and health system marketers that we figured we should blog about it.

While you could, in theory, build a homegrown digital health tool for engaging patients, it makes more sense to choose a company that has been doing this successfully and proving its effectiveness and value for the past 15 years. Such as ... ahem ... one company I know.

Here are 5 good reasons why:

What Benefits Do Patient Portals Offer Hospitals and Health Systems? [Infographic]

Posted by Jo Charest on Jul 18, 2017 2:04:00 PM

You may not realize that the earliest versions of patient portals have been around since the early 2000s. As the use of electronic health records (EHRs) increased, so too did the functionality of patient portals that often integrated with EHRs.

Where do portals stand more than 15 years after their introduction? What value do portals provide hospitals? Are they easing workflows and creating efficiencies, and for what?

This infographic brings together some of the most relevant statistics on patient portal usage.

Pregnancy & Early Childhood Content Gets an Oral Health Reboot

Posted by Jo Charest on Jul 6, 2017 2:14:00 PM

Bleeding gums, sore teeth and nausea ... many pregnant women experience changes in their mouths (not to mention the rest of their bodies). Yet, 56% do not visit a dentist during this time.

UbiCare clients will notice that the content for new and expectant parents in their SmarteXp digital engagement solution now has a refreshed focus on oral health. We've added new content and updated existing information to stress the importance of oral health for pregnant women and young children.

Thank you to our partners at the Department of Defense for working on this project with us. The Navy Pediatric Dentists/leadership reviewed the entire Pregnancy & Early Childhood solution and worked alongside UbiCare's editors to help hospitals proactively answer patients' questions about caring for their own—and their infants' and toddlers'—dental hygiene.

Healthcare Technology Is Closing the Gap in Breastfeeding Support

Posted by Betsy Weaver, Ed.D. on Jun 28, 2017 8:45:00 AM

On June 26, NPR's Michaeleen Doucleff published Secrets Of Breast-Feeding From Global Moms In The Know, highlighting different cultures' approaches to breastfeeding. What follows is a response on how healthcare technology can make up for what American women lack in terms of breastfeeding support.

NPR's spotlight on the challenges that U.S. women face when it comes to breastfeeding in this culture is critically important for new moms learning to breastfeed.

Using Digital Health Technology to Improve Health Literacy

Posted by Bill Lindsay on Jun 22, 2017 2:12:00 PM

Only 12% of American adults are considered health literate. Why does this matter to patients and healthcare providers alike?

First, high levels of health literacy are associated with better patient self-care and outcomes. Second, attentiveness to this can be an effective way to improve population health. Digital health technology is a means to this end.

3 Ways to Improve Care Coordination Through Digitization

Posted by Jo Charest on Jun 12, 2017 2:30:00 PM

American healthcare is one of the last industry holdouts when it comes to fully embracing digitization. McKinsey Global Institute has ranked healthcare 19th out of 22 sectors in its oft-cited Industry Digitization Index.

Even as health systems implement digital health tools and practices, many of these technologies remain separate, leading to a disconnected patient experience.

But there is hope for the digitization of healthcare! Many digital health tools are designed to automatically link information from different digital sources, creating efficiencies that result in a better experience for patients and better workflows for staff.

How Does Healthcare Engage Patients Amid So Many Distractions?

Posted by Jo Charest on May 31, 2017 8:30:00 AM

How many distractions will you be faced with today?

Our lives are filled with interruptions, which make getting and keeping someone’s attention harder than ever. It’s commonly said that U.S. adults are barraged with an average of 5,000+ advertisements and brand exposures every day. Only 12 of these actually make an impression.

So how do we slow the rapid-fire beat of distraction in patients’ everyday lives to truly engage them in their health?

Tap Into Human Nature to Engage Patients

Posted by Debra Zalvan on May 23, 2017 8:45:00 AM

One of my favorite health quotations comes from Florence Nightingale’s classic Notes on Nursing: What it is and What it is Not:

“Apprehension, uncertainty, waiting, expectation, fear of surprise, do a patient more harm than any exertion.”

The phrase, in a book first published in 1859, speaks to the idea that patients have strong, often conflicting emotions related to whatever care episode they’re dealing with. Pair those feelings with the fact that health information can sometimes be unfamiliar and scary, and it’s understandable that patients have a hard time comprehending and retaining a doctor’s instructions and advice.

At UbiCare, we believe there are 3 key dimensions that effective healthcare education must include to address patients’ emotional needs, impact their behavior and, ultimately, improve their health outcomes.

Using Population Health for Personal Connections with Patients  [Infographic]

Posted by TJ Hearn on Apr 4, 2017 11:09:00 AM

For some time now, health systems have been expected to use digital technology to manage a patient’s episode of care beyond the doctor’s office or hospital.

Harnessing the wealth of data on patient populations experiencing the same care episodes, digital health technology can connect providers with their patients safely, efficiently and on a large scale.

Best of all, providers can guide whole populations through their care in a way that feels extremely personal to patients.

This infographic offers some insight.
