The latest hospital star ratings, recently released by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), include some high-performing hospitals that make patient engagement a high priority.

CMS’s Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings aggregate nationwide hospital data to give consumers an easy way to compare hospital performance. The ratings are derived from 57 quality measures as outlined on the CMS Hospital Compare website, and are based on measures of patient experience, timely and effective care, surgical complications, unplanned hospital visits, use of medical imaging, and payment and value of care.

Out of 4,500 hospitals nationwide, only 6.5%, or 293, received a 5-star rating (the highest bestowed). Among the remaining hospitals, 282 received 1 star; 800 got 2 stars, 1,264 had 3 stars and 1,086 had 4 stars. The 5-star healthcare institutions were recognized for going above and beyond to provide an optimal patient care experience, as well as cost containment.

Among the 5-star recipients are hospitals using UbiCare’s SmarteXp™ patient engagement solutions.

A 5-star rating can go a long way when it comes to building a hospital’s reputation, and helping consumers choose high-quality healthcare.

By using UbiCare’s SmarteXp™ program to educate and engage patients on their own mobile devices, hospitals bridge communication gaps between provider and patient. They connect with patients and monitor their progress throughout their entire healthcare journey—most notably, outside the hospital setting and in patients’ daily lives.

Among the patients of healthcare organizations using SmarteXp, 90% report feeling more connected to their providers, and 86% feel better able to manage their care. When patients feel like partners in their care, customer satisfaction levels rise—along with the hospital’s rating and reputation.

But patient satisfaction isn’t the only benefit of effective patient engagement. When customers are actively involved in their care, self-care stays on track, post-surgery readmissions are minimized and excess costs are avoided. Fully 100% of hospitals using SmarteXp for joint replacement have readmissions below the national average of 4.6%.

Our 5-star clients have recognized the incredible value of patient engagement. We’re thrilled that they’ve been recognized for their achievements. Congrats to all!
